Maybe I'm missing something, but doesn't the inclusion of Safari on  
the iPod touch mean that you by default have access to webmail, stock  
quotes, weather, etc. via the internet? Why is it important to have a  
single-purpose widget when you already have a multi-use browser?

I don't have an iPhone or an iPod touch, so maybe there is indeed  
something unique about a widget compared to information accessed  
through a web browser on those devices. However, from the outside  
looking in, it seems like you could replicate the whole widget thing  
on one of those devices with a few bookmarks in the Safari browser.
