The old saw about "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach" has its reverse: "Those who can teach."

It shouldn't be all that mysterious: some people are just not suited for teaching, mentoring, etc.  It really takes special skills and drive to do it well, and maybe we're better off with people recognizing when that's not a role they are suited for.

I have seen designers go to the Principle Design role... roughly the  
equivalent of an art director, but usually without direct managerial  
responsibility, for those who want to focus purely on the work. For  
the life of me I don't understand this - but to each his/her own. The  
opportunity to learn, grow and become a much better designer by  
mentoring, teaching and managing is such a great experience.
