Will, if I'm mistaken, from your writing above, it sounds to me like
you are not just in the design role, but also in the engineering
role. Is that correct? Are you responsible for implementing the GUI
into production code? Are your prototypes really just then early
iterations of the production code?
I think Dan and probably some others might be living in a world where
there is a thicker line between design and development/engineering
resources. I don't think this is something "high and mighty" and
exists both within in-house and within consulting avenues.
I think we have to realize that tools, methods and processes are
always going to be appropriate within specific contexts and not
within others.
There are good reasons for separating design & development processes,
but the workflow of the organizations we work in may not allow that.
There is also a auxiliary path being created by tools like Expression
Blend which either do 2 things: empower designers to create production
software GUIs, the same way Quark empowers designers to create
pre-press ready publications. But this still won't work in many
contexts as well.
I do think Will, the snarky remarks about theoreticians on high was a
tad, well, much. Just b/c a theory doesn't work in your world
doesn't mean it isn't being applied in other contexts successfully.
