I also use a subset of my own artwork (abstract) which is available as
free content (Creative Commons by-nc) on my website:
http://www.zensui.org/img/fractal/
I've used 1024x768 for many years, but new fractals are rendered as
1440x900 because I'm saving for a MacBook Pro 15" (...almost there;
probably in January).
Either that or something zen or japanese. Mostly kanji... but a
nature, rock or water-based photo may work. Also sometimes manga or a
katana.
And, on Windows a solid black bg to remind me of the dull interface
I'm using. But there's practical reasons:
1) on Windows I mostly maximize, so a wallpaper is almost never seen.
2) when I switch between Windows, it's done quickly* (most web
design clients end feeling "dizzy" after seeing me work on a PC)...
and unelegantly (no Exposé), so always expecting a solid bg is more
comfortable.
*a clear example is using GIMP (thanks for the ones working on the UI
redesign); specially resizing a batch of images (there most be a
scriptable or automatic way to do it... Automator "see and learn"
Leopard feature may help).
3) if there's many windows open at once and neither is maximized
there's no distinction between apps... a bg just distracts more.
