Hi Maxim,
Years ago, I used to create my own backgrounds in paint shop pro and
visually create a little place for each icon. At first it was more
about laying the screen out symmetrically and aesthetically, but over
time the desktop icons would end up in groups. I changed the designs
to reflect this, and it was pretty cool.
However, I did find two recurring issues with using that model:
1) Similar to what you said, I couldn't / didn't want to add too
many icons to the screen, so that they would exceed the space I had
allotted to each icon in the wallpaper. This increased the
simplicity by reduced the flexability of my desktop.
2) On a deeper level, I think the choices that I made in my wallpaper
designs limited what I could do with the desktop. If there are only
places for internet links, computer folders, and games, what do I do
when I come across some new type of icon that doesn't fit those
categories? Go back and re-do the whole wallpaper? It sort of boxed
in my thinking. Pain in the butt, and reduced usability.
