Any research that happens before and during the process with users  
that either could inform the design (exploratory) or drive/co-create  
the design (generative). Ethnography, literature reviews, interviews,  
focus groups (gag), participatory design, etc.  I did not mean what  
some people call evaluative research--i.e. testing.
