[IxDA Discuss] Old guard vs new guard designers

I'm think I must have been unclear in my post. I am
not arguing that a clear understanding of the elements
and aspects of visual design is extraneous or
unnecessary to being a successful interaction
designer. Far from it. But these are not *sufficient*
aspects, nor do I believe that it is *necessary* to
have mastered the field of visual design to the point
that one could be a successful visual designer.

The point I'm trying to make here is that I see IxD as
a nexus of a wide variety of disciplines. Very few of
us have mastered -- through any means -- more than a
few of them. To ask more leads us to the "Must be
Leonardo daVinci" job description.

My issue is that whenever we stop asking for
*everything*, we tend to default to visual design as
the central, non-negotiable requirement of the
discipline, and while I absolutely believe that it is
an important and valid path to IxD, I do not believe
that it is the only one.
