Some more knowledgeable people than me will likely speak up, but I
think the best reference book to have around is O'Reilly's _Dynamic
HTML: The Definitive Reference_ by Danny Goodman. It's a reference
book, so not so much something to read from cover to cover, but the
introduction is a good overview. Yet when you need to know what
attributes a certain tag will or won't accept, it's essential.
To move away from table-based layouts (and why you should) I'd look
into Jeffrey Zeldman's _Designing With Web Standards_.
