[IxDA Discuss] Forced Registration and Dummy Information

We're in the process of implementing click-back email address validation
on our consumer account access site to reduce the amount of dummy
information we are getting. I'd say 8-10% of the addresses we have
collected are the "fake" address we provide as an example of the proper
format to enter data into the email address field. Another small
percentage are just plain fake - things like "email at aol.com" or
"a at yahoo.com".

Because we feel the information we provide to our customer is valuable
to them, and because the information they provide during registration is
valuable to us, we have no choice but to push them though that more
challenging process of verifying their address.

I'm hoping, of course, that they don't get hip to something like
http://10minutemail.com/. In that case we may have to start blocking
domains.

Subject: [IxDA Discuss] Forced Registration and Dummy Information

Hi,

Does anyone know if there are any studies/numbers/articles out there (or
based upon your experience) that show how many people use dummy
information if they're forced to register for a site?

For example, I just completed a competitive analysis for home builders'
sites and many of them require you to register before you look at home
plans. In most cases I just entered dummy information, as I usually do
when faced with situations like this, and then went about my business.
Do other people typically do the same? Has there been any
studies/numbers/article?

Thanks,

Kevin
