A key piece of terminology to know in that field is Sonification,  
"the use of nonspeech audio to convey information."

If you just want to look at one reference, check out "AUDITORY  
INTERFACES: The Use of Non-Speech Audio at the Interface." Gaver et  
al informed much of the original Macintosh sonification...
