Well, no.  The metaphor derives from the use of a laser in the drive, and in our imaginations 
the laser is the one that nearly cut James Bond in half in 'Goldfinger'.  That one made smoke.
Vaporized gold, anyway.

Just like the rotating hourglass - smoke shows that the burner is burning.
