Elizabeth I think this works when a search result is in a different
site, but when it is internal to the same site, I disagree. It
creates a discontinuity in web navigation that is unnecessary and
many people are thrown by unexpected and unrequested pop-out windows
like that.
I think a simple link that says, would suffice.
Better would be to have an interface that displays results in one
panel and details of individual results in another panel.
I'm not sure this model works in this sort of web site, but it does
in other contexts and might be able to made to work within this one.
The way that Google Reader gets away with this is using an accordian
view where you don't ever leave the list of results. of course it is
limited by what people put in their feeds to be viewed by readers
before being "forced" to go to the site.
On a separate note, Robert, if you just click "discussion" on the
global navigation the search box appears w/o first doing a search.
