Tom,
I won't bother to elaborate on the 'why' - Jared sums it up nicely.
However, you might as well know that having the domain work without the www.
can also require an entry in your domain's DNS record, otherwise it won't
resolve to the Web server. This might add a whole 3 minutes to the process.
Finally, I wouldn't expect you to get too much resistance to this request.
If anything, you might get an embarassed silence that it doesn't work
already.
