Other than looking at your own stats for the error page, there's  
probably no statistic that will convince someone who thinks this is a  
bad idea to think otherwise.

Instead, I'd just keep pushing on elaborating the reasons why the non- 
www case should get the under construction page. Why is it a good  
idea to give people trying to reach you (even if it's a small number)  
a misleading error message?
