Hello You Le,

You might want to join the Sustainable CHI group and explore your topic there: http://groups.google.com/group/sustainable-chi

Eli Blevis at Indiana U had a paper at CHI 2007 entitled "Sustainable Interaction Design: Invention & Disposal, Renewal & Reuse" that's available on the web: http://design.informatics.indiana.edu/designii/eli/images/9/90/P503-blevis.pdf

As for impact of sustainability considerations on my designs, my work primarily involves application software. Usability is a contributor to sustainability as computer & human time and mental & physical effort have associated costs. I try to design so that paper input/output is unnecessary and not a path of least resistance for people using my applications. Efficient data storage and processing logic also reduce power consumption and hardware costs. Every little bit helps.

I wear other design hats in my home life & avocations. There too, sustainability is always a design factor, though not always my primary consideration.

I applaud your choice of topic & hope you enjoy your project!

Peace,
Doug Anderson

Hi,

I am an Interaction Design student from the Umea Institute of Design in Sweden.

I am taking my master degree in Interaction Design and am now preparing for my graduation project, which will last for 20 weeks starting from 20thJanuary 2008.

The theme I want to develop is: What could be the role of Interaction Design in Sustainability?

<snip>

I would like to have your feedback on the theme that I have selected. I would also like to know, does sustainability affect any of your design decision making? If you have any information related to the theme, I would be delighted to know.

Last but not least, I am also looking for sponsorship. If anyone knows companies which may be interested in sponsoring my study (or maybe one of you), any information is gladly welcome.

Thanks,
You Le
