As a photographer and user of Flickr, I use it because of the storage,
and I can be at anyone's house, or at work, and if I want to show
something, it is immediate and easy. They give you an address that is
easy to verbalize (www.flickr.com/ceciliacase, for example :), and I
can organize my photographs, get feedback on what people like (very
nice for getting critiques on my work).

Most of all, it is easy for my Grandmother to view something. She has
always struggled with attachments in emails, but with Flickr, all she
has to know is how to click on a link in her email.

Jeez, I sound like a commercial... Really, I thought that I would end
up spending a lot of time organizing everything, but it turns out it
doesn't _require_ any organization at all, but make it very easy if
you do want to do a lot of categorization and organization.

I will give an example. My best friend just had baby. I took 100
pictures, and uploaded 34. I used the batch uploader, so it took me
less then a minute to add batch tags, create a new set, and then I
let it upload the pictures. The new mom gave me a list of emails to
send the pictures to, so I sent out a short email with the link to
the slideshow of the set. All told, using Flickr took me less then
five minutes. If I had needed to send the picures via email, I would
have had to choose less pictures to comply with the 10Meg limit, it
would have been far less nice-looking then the automatic slideshow,
and they would have had to deal with attachments. And I may not have
gotten it done for another week, because the workflow is not as
slick.

As to your second question, Flickr (and etc.) are made for people who
do photography a lot. Uploading to a hobby site may make sense if all
you take pictures of are of your hobby. Uploading to a newspaper may
make sense if you are a citizen reporter. Specialty sites connect you
with the people who care about that one thing, while offering a lot of
the benefits the Flickr offers.
