[IxDA Discuss] A more usable font for highway signs

I have a burning question, not strictly related to the font though.

Why is that many signs have right angled corners yet have a rounded
internal border

Is there an underlying design principle that make this easier to
read, or is it just accidental/laziness?

(note: European signs are physically rounded and look much more
'finished')
