My perspective is that, if I look back over the last 15 years or so, I come
pretty close to meeting those requirements.
But there's a real problem of focus that's missing from a soup-to-nuts job
description like this one. What I've noticed is that, as I've grown as a
designer (especially in visual design work), my development skills cool
down. If I wanted to get hot again as a web or Java dev, I'd need to devote
serious time to it and leave Photoshop on the shelf. Domain skills the same
way - I'm up on group communications now, but much of the CRM, logistics,
and telephony stuff I used to do is buried in the gray matter somewhere.
I'm a real believer in the "big tent" idea of design, and enjoy being able
to exercise craftsmanship in designing and building interfaces, but there's
a real practical limit in how good a single person can get in so many
different areas. There's also a difference between "programmer mind" and
"designer mind" that is all too easy to miss when you're acting as both.
When the designer has their "programmer mind" engaged, you may not get such
great design results.
