Hahaha.

But seriously, there are a few of these people out there. Remove the
word "mastering," substitute a commodore 64 then DOS then C/Java for
"unix," and you'd almost have me. ;)
Of course, I went into UX design instead, but I have a passable
knowledge of usability engineering... Alas, no brokering.

But beyond finding such a person, is it realistic to have such diverse
requirements for one position? Staying current in one or two fields is a
fair amount of work - keeping up-to-date in three to four fields while
maintaining an acceptable level of work output and job satisfaction
seems a bit unrealistic to me.

I use my programming background to augment my design skills - it helps
me to understand what's possible and roughly how some things can be
implemented, and in the past I've been able to head off some amount of
engineering pushback of "impossible/too difficult." It also helps me to
understand the engineer's language. But I don't program anymore - don't
really want to.

I've had one-man-band jobs in the past, and they've always led to
burnout, general grumpiness over time, and inevitably being unable to
keep up with all of the changes in the industries. I'm immensely happy
(and more productive) with my position now, as a UX designer only.
The person who has all of these skills PLUS the ability to stay focused,
current, and happy while performing them all in tandem would seem
exceedingly rare, if s/he exists at all.
In reality, I've found it very difficult just to find exceptional
designers with a rounded UX-only skill set...

Of course, I could be wrong.
Good luck with your search.

Sylvania

don't forget a familiarity with high-performance trading applications.

I think this person grew up in an artistic family, painting at an
early age, and mastering composition and color theory by age 10.
however, by middle school he/she became disillusioned with art,
immersed themselves in computers, and spent through high school into
college up late at night hacking away at unix machines. only to
find, in the last year of school they didn't want to actually do
programming, so proceeded to get a masters in usability engineering.
however, the career path wasn't lucrative enough, so he/she actually
decided to become a broker after finally getting out of school. et
voila! I sure hope they're reading this list...
