Massive but beautifully written book covering almost everything you can
imagine typography. Part reference guide, part history book, part
meditation. Like a fractal it gets more detailed as you zoom in,
exposing how much really goes into typography, both technically and
aesthetically.

I whole-heartedly second this recommendation. Simply an amazing book
whether you have a graphic design background or not.

I would also add Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics" to the mix if it
hasn't already been mentioned.
