Lori,

You mentioned highlighting C to indicate that it's the current
selection.  Based on that:  what if, as the user moused over the "-"
signs next to A and B, those items were highlighted in a paler version
of the same color?  This  ghosted highlight might imply that
"something highlighting-related is going to happen when you click
here."   Then, when the user clicks the "-" sign next to A, it won't
be as a big a context shift for A to become highlighted:  the user
will already have been cued that something was about to happen with A.
