I agree with Jakob here... and typing a state abbreviation is alot 
easier than trying to click on your state in an image map, especially 
if your state is small.

It should be a pretty straightforward javascript form validation (no 
AJAX required)... If the entered value doesn't match a list of 50 
abbreviations, have the form bubble up an in-context alert (a 
javascript alert window - or better - CSS alert similar in style to the 
form field hints like they have at Vox - http://www.vox.com/register 
)...
