I suggest installing Proce55ing and opening up the project Valence and
rewriting some of the code. I think Jitter and VVVV are good 
applications
as well.

But that is art, not design. I find that following Tufte's guidelines 
with
some of Nigel Holmes methodology is a good way to do flat explanations
of time influenced events.
