Georgia,
If youi are still an active student, you can join many of these fairly cheap. Then through participation you acn determine how they align with your personal, professional or career goals - and join for the full professional rate as it best benefits you. My last semester in grad school I joined the UPA, SIG-CHI, AIGA, ISDA, and IxDA - the only group that I did not join was DMI because it was fairly expensive. There is also IAI, oh, and I also joined Bay-CHi for their job listing service.
