My solution is a combination of your suggestions 2 (Reasoning) and 3 (Get more opinions): Compare the design with the requirements. The design that best matches the requirements ("reasoning") is the best solution. If the requirements aren't specific enough to make the call, get more/detailed requirements ("get more opinions").
