User Interaction / IDE Designer, Marina del Rey, CA

PortBlue has developed a web application authoring platform that is used
by our product team to develop custom and subscription applications
without writing traditional code. We are looking for a designer, thought
leader and advocate that will be responsible for: 

- Working with individual product managers to develop new product
concepts, application workflow and design concepts to achieve business
goals, and evaluating those designs through user testing. 
- Leading the evolution of the "application builder" platform through
generation of abstraction concepts, metaphors, requirements, and
detailed designs for both the end user applications and the authoring
application itself. 
- Being the principal advocate for both the application end user as well
as the authoring tool user through rigorous understanding of human
factors, modeling, and computer-human interaction issues centered on
"application development for the lay-programmer". 
- Being "hands on" in design, analysis, and testing as well as working
with the platform management team to chart a course for product
evolution. 
- Be on top of the competitive landscape of products for developing
applications without "programming". 

Required Experience
- Broad experience with web-based and thin-client application design as
well as understanding the capabilities of the evolving AJAX
technologies. 
- Expertise with Information Architecture and user workflow patterns. 
- Expertise with complex business data modeling in the context of
requirements analysis and product specification. 
- Formal training +8 years of experience, degree preferred in computer
human interaction, human factors, interaction design, or cognitive
psychology.

sector:
- plan and model surgical center development. 
- guide hospital planning, response, and recovery for large scale
emergencies and disasters. 
- analyze and optimize the business and operational aspect of a
physician's practices.

1. Many products have been developed to allow lay- or non-programmers to
develop various types of software applications.  Give several examples
of products that you think have a done a good job achieving this goal
and discuss the common pitfalls that have resulted in many such products
failing.

2.  Briefly discuss the tradeoffs between having every option and
feature available through a "drag and drop" or wysiwyg interface versus
using XML, command languages, or menus for behavior specification.

3. What aspects of PortBlue (the company, the product, etc) do you find
compelling?
