[IxDA Discuss] Alternatives to CHI

As I practicing designer I've found CHI in the past to be too
academic to justify the time and effort. When I recently challenged
the value of my group sending designers to CHI with the aim to
improve their professional skill set I was quickly tasked with
compiling a list of alternative conferences.

So, do any of you have any recommendations or thoughts on the matter,
what are the best conferences/gatherings for practicing designers?
Conferences with a focus on non-PC interaction would be of especial
interest to me.

thanks for any help,
