Hi Dave,

Passion can both inspire and guide designers. The skill of a good designer is to know when to let go and when to reign in again. I am not saying abandon passion. "Data" can aid designers directing their passion towards a useful, usable and desirable solution. Perhaps you are using the term data too strictly and are not aware of the kinds of data that you are already using when you are designing? The best designs are often those that have to deal with the biggest constraints. Constraints are data that have been interpreted by someone as a restriction, no? Denying data a role in design is to reduce design to a random, accidental exercise. 

I read once that you can get away with murder in France as long as you can make a case that you did it out of passion
 The French, the book said, understand how passion can drive you to do crazy things. I guess this calls for a study on French design?
