Russel and Sabine,
We should probably explain what is meant by "design by committee".
Often, this is a term that a designer uses when their design
disappears into a group that makes decisions that aren't based on a
user-centered process. The designer is then left to implement the
changes.
I would say that any project that lacks a clear design process that
has repeatedly been used successfully will have problems.
On the other hand, I believe strongly in involving non-designers as
part of the internal team to gain feedback and guide the evolution of
a project. A collaborative process will definitely produce better
results than a designer working by himself/herself. The idea of the
lone genius designer developing a complete product design by
themselves is gone.
