I work on small devices for the elderly and, the best practices that I've found are to use heavier type (Arial Bold/Arial Narrow Bold variants) at a minimum character height of 2.5mm. We've tested prototypes that make use of these specs with older people and always gotten positive marks for readability.
Narrow type affords more space, with a slight readability loss.

Hello,
Has anybody any pointer/theory/experiment about the fonts which are better
(that is, enable better reading) for small (e.g. PDA) screens?
Thanks,
-c.
