I think the 'contact sheet' can be a good way to communicate the size
and give an overview of the contents of a slide show. It also provides
for an alternate entry point in to what would otherwise be a blind
linear process.
An ideal implementation integrates both... A big photo above with the
contact sheet below (or to the side), enabling non-linear access and
doubling as a kind of status indicator of your progress thought the
series.

in keeping with this thread...what do you all think about showing the
'contact sheet' view prior to getting to the 'full photo/slide show'
view of a photo gallery?
for example...
on a site you see a gallery titled: 'vacation photos'.
you click on the promo and arrive at the 'contact sheet' view. (thumbs)
you then must click on a thumbnail to arrive at the 'full photo/slide
show' view which also allows you to scroll thru the gallery.
is the 'contact sheet; view unnecessary? should the user go straight to
the 'full photo/slide show' view?
