For simple implementations Slideshow Pro http://www.slideshowpro.net/ has
some interesting features. I wouldn't use it for high traffic sites or sites
built around photo sharing, but for a personal site or blog it's decent. It
has some interesting features including the ability to upload a single zip
file with many images. The UI for the actual gallery is similar to that used
by the New York Times and is pretty slick.

Downsides are that it requires the standard "damn I have to wait for flash
to load" pre-loader, the actual code for it is very clunky and almost
impossible to customize, and it was not built for large applications.

One of my biggest pet peeves with online photo galleries is when the
"next/previous" links move relative to the size of the image and out from
under your mouse.
