For me the four keys to Flickr's addictiveness are:
- ease of uploading (through the little uploader application)
- ease of organization (through "sets" and tags)
- ease of exploration (to see all the shtuff others have shot)
- and the killer: community. The Pittsburgh Flickr group meets regularly, so
the comments people leave on one another's photos are an expression of
support and encouragement from your peeps. Among the non-local groups I
belong to, despite some of the weirdness caused by the popularity contest
that happens on Flickr, I will say I definitely learn. The flickr community
(groups, friends, comments, etc.) definitely effects what I shoot and how I
shoot it.
All that said, when it comes to sharing images with family and friends so
they can download and print them, I wind up making private pages on my own
site, usually using Photoshop's web page maker. Flickr is very public.
. . .
By the way, I'm starting a project related to sharing of photographs in
public places. Would be happy to swap insights and resources with anyone who
has dug deeply into the bundle of related questions.
Cheers,
- marc
