For personal galleries: It's been my observation that Flickr is not well
suited for people that want to view a picture or pictures but want minimal
involvement with any other features. If I post pictures of my kids on Flickr
I will get strong participation from computer/internet savvy crowd in my
family (at least from those that are interested) but the beginner crowds
that care to look are either intimidated by the options presented or they
simply don't understand and don't see the value so I get negative responses.

I have found that for the above scenario most people are happy, of course,
with a clear path to their simple goal: see pictures of the kids and then
leave. So I created my own site and I made it easy to see a thumbnail, click
a link to a larger picture, and navigate through. This crowd is also not
adverse to effects. I did just add the ligthbox 2.0
script<http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox2/>and it was
well received.

Next step is taking the open source CMS MODx <http://modxcms.com/> and using
the MaxiGallery snippet<http://modxcms.com/MaxiGallery-v0.5-BETA2-1190.html>,
which also uses lightbox 2.0. This way I won't be the only one uploading
pictures for the entire family.
