I can't resist:

Many, if not most, of these books are from a wide variety of different 
micro-fields, often written by people who might be identified as: usability 
professionals, technical communicators, market researchers as well as 
designers.

Isn't this an obvious effect in broad field that is still "forming and 
norming" and a sign of the deep inter-relationships between these 
micro-disciplines. And it seems equally clear that the emphasis each 
practitioner places on different aspects of the overall process has to do 
with their background/training, personal skillsa and, most importantly, the 
type of products they work on (that is, industry, context of use, audience 
and medium).
